WEDNESDAY CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFYING MATCH TALKING POINT

Club Brugge 0-4 Manchester United: Rooney bags hat-trick for United

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick and Ander Herrera bagged his first goal of the season as Manchester United cruised into the Champions League group stages with a 4-0 win over Club Brugge.
The England striker, having gone 10 games without a goal, slotted home the opener on 20 minutes as his side breezed towards a 7-1 aggregate score. Rooney capped off a wonderful team move from close range for a second, before rounding off his first hat-trick since August 2011 eight minutes later with another neat finish inside the box.
Herrera made it 4-0 just after the hour-mark but it should have been five when substitute Javier Hernandez stepped up to take a late penalty, but slipped and put it wide.
United manager Louis van Gaal warned against complacency, despite taking a 3-1 lead into the second leg in Belgium, and his side did not show anything of the sort.

Rooney was lively from the outset and, after Tom De Sutter's close-range effort was blocked by Luke Shaw, he and Juan Mata began to torment Brugge defenders.
But it was Memphis Depay who deserved the plaudits for the opener, cutting inside from the left and beating two players before feinting to shoot, and setting up Rooney with superbly weighted pass.
Depay could have doubled United's lead before the break when Rooney turned provider and chipped the ball into his stride in the box, but his shot was blocked by the last defender. Manchester United will earn a minimum of £9.92m for qualifying.
Brugge had reacted well to going behind, having a decent spell that saw a number of crosses flash across the box, but Depay had a second chance before the interval, again stopped by his marker before a shot could be had Bastian Schweinsteiger replaced Adnan Januzaj at the break and brought experienced calm into United's midfield, beginning the move that allowed Herrera to cross unselfishly for Rooney to tap the second into an empty net on 49 minutes.

Jean-Charles Castelletto is put under pressure by Luke Shaw
Jean-Charles Castelletto is put under pressure by Luke Shaw and Schweinsteiger was the catalyst for Rooney's third too - finding Mata on the right, who cut inside and played in Rooney to slot home through the keeper's legs. Six minutes later Schweinsteiger got the direct assist he deserved when his through-ball put Herrera into acres of space to find the right-hand corner and United's fourth.
Hernandez, whose United future has been far from certain this summer, had the chance for a first goal of his own after Oscar Duarte was harshly judged to have handled a cross from the right - but his standing leg ripped the turf from under him and he could not put a clean strike on the spot-kick Wayne Rooney scored his first hat-trick since 2011.

Celtic weakness cruelly exposed in defeat

In the minutes after Celtic's lame exit from the Champions League, the mixed zone at the Swedbank Stadium was like a hospital ward for damaged footballers.
The visiting team trooped in with their pride hurting not just because of what their driven opponents from Malmo had just done to them but by what their own manager had said about them.
When Ronny Deila accused his team of being "scared" and "frightened" on the night, it was as firm a kick to their collective solar plexus as anything the Swedes visited upon them.  By levelling an accusation of timidity at his players, Deila was calling into question all sorts of things - principally their character.
It was a searing comment, the most serious accusation he could have made. And he was correct. Celtic failed dismally to front-up. Their go-to players were routed. Virgil van Dijk, Charlie Mulgrew, Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen were all badly beaten in their head-to-heads. Celtic's leaders were cowed.
True, they were the victims of a miscarriage of justice when Nir Bitton's goal was disallowed just before the break, but later on, nobody from the Celtic camp sought refuge in a hard luck story.
Fair play to them for that. Refusing to cling to that life raft was the best part of their night. Goal or no goal, they knew they weren't good enough. Not even close.
Brown, the captain, called it best when he said he was ashamed of the performance. Brown's honesty was commendable in a way that his football was not.

Malmo players celebrate their 2-0 win over Celtic for a 4-3 aggregate success
The poverty of Celtic's play was shocking. No sensible person would ever make grand claims about Deila's team, but even if by modest standards this was dreadful.
Their passing was abject to the point of embarrassing. Too often they had a death-wish when in possession. Misplaced pass followed misplaced pass and all the while Malmo's confidence grew as the noise level of their supporters spurred them on.
From early in the evening, Celtic had the appearance of men who were caving in under the pressure. In the end, they went down, not like the lions Deila believed them to be or the pigs they were allegedly accused of being , but mice.
Two goals conceded from corner kicks told its own story. They had their warning that corners could hurt them when Jo Inge Berget smashed in the goal that made it 3-2 in Glasgow, but this is a Celtic team that won't - or can't - learn its lesson.
The verve of their first 20 minutes at Celtic Park was like a snapshot from another era. It was as if the characters who had tormented Malmo in that opening spell in Glasgow had been replaced by a gang of imposters.
Deila slammed his players but he hardly exonerated himself. How could he when he hopelessly misjudged the merits of his team, talking them up like they had made vast progress in the past year.
If they have made any, it's limited and painfully short of disposing of a team like Malmo, a moderate side put together for small money, but one in possession of the kind of mettle that Celtic do not possess.
There was a moment in the lead-up to Malmo's second goal that was, in some ways, illustrative of the difference between the teams. It involved the local talisman, Markus Rosenberg, and Brown, the guy who is supposed to be Celtic's galvanising presence.
Celtic manager Ronny Deila
Ronny Deila has fallen short at this stage of the competition for two years running with Celtic
A lobbed ball was played into the Celtic half and Rosenberg and Brown competed for it. We say competed but, in truth, it wasn't a contest. Rosenberg got there first, back-headed it and then, as Brown was gathering his thoughts, Rosenberg left him for dead and set off in a beeline for the Celtic penalty box.
The ball went to Berget, who forced a fine save from Craig Gordon. When the ball broke loose, it was Rosenberg who was on to it. As he was forcing a second wonderful save from the Celtic goalkeeper, Brown still hadn't recovered his ground.
    Interview - Kris Commons
Rosenberg's thinking was quicker and his hunger greater. He was just sharper. They all were.
Malmo won a corner in that moment and promptly scored from it, Dedryck Boyata deflecting a shot into his own net. We remember the hapless endgame from the Celtic defender, but the desire that preceded it from the Malmo striker was indicative of the home team's attitude.
The infuriating thing for Celtic is that they had the winning of this tie and let it slip. At 2-0 and again at 3-1 they had Malmo where they wanted them in the first leg but they couldn't finish them off. What is it they say about giving a sucker an even break?
This was an avoidable failure. Every time Celtic miss out on the Champions League group stage they make it harder on themselves to return. You really have to wonder when Celtic will be back on the big stage.
It is said that their natural habitat now is the Europa League but you wouldn't be too confident in Celtic holding their own in that competition either.
When Van Dijk departs, Celtic's central defensive options will be Efe Ambrose. Boyata - who has something of the Ambrose about him - and young Eoghan O'Connell.
Virgil van Dijk is being heavily linked with a move away from Celtic
Virgil van Dijk is being heavily linked with a move away from Celtic
At a push, you could play Mulgrew and Mikael Lustig in there, but that's only creating problems elsewhere.
Up front, Leigh Griffiths is their only realistic option. Nadir Ciftci looks leaden-footed and out of his depth at that level. Stefan Scepovic, a Deila signing, was a waste of £2.2m and Anthony Stokes is miles out of the European picture these days.
The squad has pockets of talent, but it's thin on the ground in a European context and too much of it is given to bouts of flakiness, the kind of thing that Brown said he was ashamed of.
For 20 minutes in the first leg, it was easy to see what Deila was talking about when he spoke of the huge progress made in the last year. For so much that followed those 20 minutes it was hard to see any improvement.
Malmo have done brilliantly to make it through. Their budget is a fraction of Celtic's and their team is a brand new one, still gelling. They're not a formidable side but they have a formidable spirit.  They showed mental strength where Celtic showed weakness. They looked like players who loved the occasion. Celtic, in comparison, were spooked by it.
Malmo got what they deserved on Tuesday - and so did Celtic. They had their chance - and they blew it.

Transfer Talk: Ryan Gauld could join Celtic on loan, Everton to reject Chelsea target's transfer request

Transfer Talk: Ryan Gauld could join Celtic on loan, John Stones; Everton to reject Chelsea target's transfer request

Ryan Gauld, Scotland
Loan: Sporting Lisbon want to give Ryan Gauld first team football this season.
Celtic have already signed one young, prodigal playmaker this summer - with Scott Allan joining last week - but they might have their sights set on another one.
Sporting Lisbon are keen to give Ryan Gauld some first-team football this season, with Portuguese press reporting that the former Dundee United star could be on his way to Parkhead.
Sticking with Celtic, Ronny Deila is keen to extend James Forrest's contract at the club after an impressive start to the season by the winger.
And Rangers have reportedly completed the loan signing of Arsenal and USA wunderkind Gedion Zelalem on a season-long loan. It's all in today's Transfer Talk.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says the club will turn down defender John Stones's transfer request.
The England international, 21, asked to leave on Tuesday after the Toffees refused offers of £20m, £26m and £30m from Premier League champions Chelsea.
However, the Blues will reportedly return with a £40m bid  before the transfer window closes on Monday.
"Sometimes money can't buy everything and that is going to be a very strong statement at Everton," said Martinez.
"This is not a moment when we can use any money to get us stronger."
Martinez started Stones in Everton's League Cup second-round tie at Barnsley on Wednesday, with the defender playing the whole of their 5-3 extra-time victory.
"John, for a young man under massive pressure, was terrific," added Martinez.
The Spaniard has been angered by Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho's public pursuit of Stones and says he trusts Everton chairman Bill Kenwright to stand firm and retain the centre-back.
"We have a chairman who will do the right thing for the club and for the team and, as a true Evertonian, we are clear he will not be easily influenced in taking the money and accepting things which will clearly make our team weaker," he said.
"The situation with John is very clear. We care about him, we will protect him and make sure we give him everything we can to allow him to enjoy his football."
Stones, who arrived from Barnsley for £3m in February 2013, has four years left on his contract after signing an extension in August 2014.

West Ham transfer news: Victor Moses, Joey Barton, Aaron Lennon and Adnan Januzaj amongst targets as Bilic calls for width

West Ham transfer news: Victor Moses, Joey Barton, Aaron Lennon and Adnan Januzaj amongst targets as Bilic calls for width

West Ham have Chelsea winger Victor Moses top of their wanted list and could also resurrect a move for former QPR midfielder Joey Barton.
The Hammers, stung by successive home defeats against Leicester and Bournemouth, face a week of hectic transfer activity with manager Slaven Bilic desperate to add width to his team before the window closes. West Ham have been keen on Moses for some and are prepared to offer £6million. Chelsea, who value the 24-year-old at around £10m, were reluctant to sell until last week, when they signed Pedro from Barcelona.
If that deal falls through West Ham are likely to ask Tottenham about signing Aaron Lennon on loan while Manchester United’s Adnan Januzaj could also be an option.
The club are also reported to be showing interest in Toulouse’s Wissam Ben Yedder, who can play as either a central striker or wide player.
Alex Song, who was on loan from Barcelona last season, is set to join West Ham but is recovering from an ankle operation.
With Song still not 100 per cent, the Hammers are considering reviving their move for Barton, who they see as ideal short-term cover. Barton is a free agent after being released by QPR. He was in talks with the Hammers until they pulled out of a deal two weeks ago following opposition from some supporters.

Manchester United are willing to spend £240m on a deal for Barcelona's Brazil forward Neymar, 23.
Chelsea will continue to pursue Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, 22, until the transfer window closes despite the France international's £70m price tag because manager Jose Mourinho has concerns over current midfielders Nemanja Matic, 27, and Cesc Fabregas, 28.
Arsenal are considering a move for Paris St-Germain's Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, 28, after France international Karim Benzema, 27, closed the door on any prospect of him leaving Real Madrid.

Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Thomas Muller

Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Thomas Muller, Victor Valdes Rumours

Bayern Munich are reportedly set to award star forward Thomas Muller a new and improved contract, putting an end to ongoing transfer rumours linking the German with a move to Old Trafford.
That's according to SportBild ((h/t Daily Star's Jamie Anderson), which believe the 25-year-old is in line for a significant raise on his current wages of £110,000 per week. The magazine splashed the news all over its cover, as shared by sports writer Christian Falk:
The Germany international has been talked about as a potential transfer target for United all summer long, with the latest rumours suggesting the club could make a £71.9 million offer for his services, per Anderson. Bayern remain adamant the forward is not for sale, with the likes of sporting director Matthias Sammer ruling out a move in recent weeks, via sports writer Pete O'Rourke:
Handing a star player a new and improved contract remains the best way to quash any transfer rumours, however, and it seems the Bavarians have the same idea.
Muller has spent his entire professional career with Die Rekordmeister and has become one of manager Pep Guardiola's most pivotal players, establishing himself as one of the best forwards in the world. At the age of 25, he has already won just about every major trophy, including the 2014 World Cup with Germany.
He's not a traditional striker or second striker but instead plays a free role for the Bavarians, serving as the link-up player between the midfielders and Robert Lewandowski and handling the ball all over the pitch. Last season, he managed to score 13 goals in the Bundesliga and added 10 assists, via WhoScored.com.
United's forwards have had a rocky start to the 2015-16 season as a group, and the club has scored just one Premier League goal themselves through three matches, with Tottenham Hotspur's Kyle Walker chipping in an own goal as well. As a result, the Red Devils have been linked with a host of star forwards, and STV Sport's Stefan Bienkowski couldn't help but crack a joke:
According to Sky Germany (h/t Daily Star's Alex Harris) the Mancunians are preparing to make one final offer for Muller before the end of the summer window, but an actual transfer has never seemed likely. And if the Bavarians do indeed offer Muller a new contract with better terms, United's chances of landing his signature may be worse than ever.

Liverpool Transfer RUMOR: Mario Balotelli Agrees 'Anti-Scandal' AC Milan Clause

Liverpool Transfer RUMOR: Mario Balotelli Agrees 'Anti-Scandal' AC Milan Clause

Liverpool Transfer News: Mario Balotelli Agrees 'Anti-Scandal' AC Milan Clause
Unique clauses in contracts are not unusual in modern football, but when it comes to Italy striker Mario  Balotelli, things are often unprecedented. So perhaps it’s little surprise that with the forward poised to sign for Milan on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool, the Rossoneri have inserted an “anti-scandal” stipulation into the transfer.
That’s according to reports in Italy, which outlined some of the conditions that will make up this bespoke clause:
Balotelli will have to avoid making any trouble. Milan have spent time during the talks working on a clause under the name "anti-scandal."
The said discipline clause, reports in Italy assure, requires him to turn up for training on time, to not be provocative and to behave himself off the pitch.
In fact, the player himself, in his first words back at the club, admitted as much: "I must work and not talk," he said.
Balotelli has also been told "extravagant haircuts and clothing" are off limits, as will be smoking and clubbing. His social media activity will also reportedly be "closely monitored."
Whether or not Balotelli adheres to these terms is another matter entirely, of course. His career so far has been filled with a litany of peculiar moments, both on and off the field. At Liverpool, according to report, the Italian would interrupt coaches mid-discussion and once scored an own goal from the halfway line in a training match.
It’s no surprise, therefore, that the Reds want rid of him, although Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe doesn’t see the point of loaning Balotelli to Milan with no option to buy:
Perhaps it says a lot about how desperate Liverpool are to get rid of a player who seems to be a hugely disruptive influence. All associated with the Merseyside club would probably begrudgingly admit that signing the player from Milan was a major error on their part, and given their current plethora of options in the centre-forward position, he’s simply not needed.

Rodgers seems desperate to get rid of Balotelli.
The fact that no team wanted to sign Balotelli permanently should tell the player something too. Throughout the course of his career, he’s been regularly courted by illustrious teams, but this was the first time there seemed to be a scarcity of potential suitors. Perhaps that’ll finally flick a switch in the mind of the Italian.

Arsenal Transfer News: Grzegorz Krychowiak Release Fee to Be Met, Latest Rumours

Arsenal are reportedly planning on triggering the £21.2 million release clause of Sevilla star Grzegorz Krychowiak and adding some more bite to the midfield areas before the end of the summer transfer window. That's according to a reliable source inside Emirate , who noted that manager Arsene Wenger is satisfied with the players he currently has at his disposal but still plans on adding to his squad.
Arsene Wenger sent scouts to watch Krychowiak during the European Super Cup, which Sevilla lost to Barcelona, and shared comments team-mate Vicente Iborra made earlier this month.  , Iborra acknowledged he was afraid someone would trigger the 25-year-old's buyout clause, saying: "Of course I am concerned that Krychowiak could be taken away. I always want to have the best players in the team. He brings so much. I hope he stays. I understand Sevilla's position, it is clear, and I hope nobody pays that clause, and he stays with us." Krychowiak joined Sevilla from Reims in the summer of 2014 as a bit of an unknown quantity, having impressed greatly the two years before. Flying under the radar, plenty of top clubs missed out on the chance to sign him for pennies on the dollar, including the Gunners

Chelsea FC Transfer News : John Stones, Ezequiel Garay, More!

Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: John Stones, Ezequiel Garay, More!

The transfer season is in full swing, so let’s take a look at what transfer rumours concerning Chelsea FC are flying around the press this morning.

John Stones

The John Stones-Chelsea transfer saga saw a major development yesterday after the Everton defender reportedly handed in his transfer request. Jose Mourinho indicated that the onus was on the youngster to make the deal happen after Blues offers were repeatedly rejected, and now the 21-year-old has made a significant move. As a result, Chelsea are readying another bid worth around £40million in the hope that Stones’ actions will force Roberto Martinez to part with him for a lower than desired price.
Chelsea will return to Everton with a fourth and final offer for John Stones potentially worth £40m after the England international submitted a formal transfer request.

Paul Pogba

Chelsea are continuing in their efforts to land French superstar Paul Pogba. The midfielder has been on Jose Mourinho’s radar for some time now, and the Blues are ready to go in with a mega bid seemingly buoyed by the surprising Pedro swoop. After a deal was agreed with Juventus that saw Juan Cuadrado move to Italy on loan, Chelsea now believe that Juve will accept an offer of around £70m.
The deal for Pogba, 22, would break the British transfer record by more than £10m and, while its success is by no means guaranteed, sufficient encouragement has been given to Chelsea that they will pursue the deal this week.

Ezequiel Garay

With rumours suggesting that Chelsea may make a move for Ezequiel Garay should a John Stones transfer fail to materialise, Zenit St Petersburg have issued a hands-off warning regarding the defender. The Blues are in dire need of a centre-back and even though recent developments indicate that Stones will be a Chelsea player by the end of the window, Garay has been a potential fall-back option.
Zenit St Petersburg will resist any attempt by Chelsea to sign Ezequiel Garay if they pursue the central defender as an alternative to John Stones.
The Russian club insists that Garay is not for sale at any price and there has been no contact from Chelsea to make an inquiry.
